Ciara's Egyptian Nightmare (Continued)
Story by Torqual / Text by Rosellafan
As she made it to the foot of the large slab sealing the entrance, she took a moment to catch her breath and groom herself, brushing sand off her tights and shaking the pesky stuff out of her sandals. Ciara studied the symbols on the door while gathering her thoughts. Despite three thousand years of erosion, a pattern was barely visible. It was definitely similar to that of the constellations in the clear sky above. The answer had come to her in the middle of the night, and the excitement of putting that answer to work was electric. She traced her hands over the pattern as she had in her mind an hour previously. They proved to host a series of shallow holes that made up a secret way of unlocking the pyramid entranceway. It had been a mystery earlier, but the answer had been right up there in the night sky all along.
Upon pressing a finger deep into a central hole that must - Ciara thought - represent the North Star, a deep groan ushered forth as a series of machinations ran their course. The thick stone entrance of the pyramid began to slowly swing open and up, counterbalanced by a heavy weight and pulley system. The air that rushed forth, thousands of years old curled around Ciara’s slender body like a centuries old ghost, filling her nostrils and causing her to squint her eyes and cup a small hand over her nose and mouth. Despite her best efforts her eyes could not penetrate the darkened path that lay beyond the doorway. Looking around the excavation site, her eyebrows rose and she allowed a smile beneath the hand covering her nose and mouth, as she found a lantern and a box of matches resting outside the base of the entranceway. It was as if the little guy was just waiting for Ciara Nightingale to solve the mystery of the lost Egyptian pyramid entranceway, and now it was ready to help guide her into the depths beyond.
With the gritty strike of a match, the air smelled of sulfur and the trusty lantern crackled to life. A healthy flame created a warm glow that cast off the darkness as it bobbed up and down in Ciara’s hand while she gingerly stepped into the tunnel, nervously looking back. It would surely be a better idea to wait for the morning when she could enter the tomb with the rest of the expedition party. Somehow she knew that it was a bad idea to go in there alone at night, but she was so excited about discovering the way. In her years of study she had never imagined that she'd have the secrets of a undiscovered pyramid all to herself! It had taken her a long while to get there, and she wasn't going back without taking just a quick look inside first. She promised herself that she would only take a cursory look through the tomb before returning to her sleeping bag.
